Oct. of political mysteries of Nez Perce is "Who is Cary H. Melby?" In the primary on August 3 the name of Melby was written in on 87 ballots in the republican party for county auditor, that of Thomas D. Barton, democratic primary candidate, was written in on 86 republican ballots. Melby therefore won the republican nomination by one vote, Barton, had he received the democratic primary nomination, would have been the nominee of all parties.

Every one is asking "Who is this man It is known he is an office man. that he has worked for a couple of lumber concerns and that ho attends to the books of others, but to the average citizen he is unknown. It is safe to say he is the least known candidate that ever entered a race for a political office in this county. Inquiry fails to reveal Iris identity. where he stays, what he does, how capable he may be, But Melby's, supporters claim he will be of the real surprises next Tuesday.

He has been villified and he has been exalted, but vilification stood out pre-eminently.

Many accusations have been made against him; he has been at rested but never jailed; he has been accused of being for and against prohibition, and he has openly stated that while he did not drink he is opposed to prohibition as now enforced. Yellowley to reissue an alcohol withdrawal permit for that company, which he revoked. Parker, according to Special Agent Patrick Roche, also was connected with Canadian group of bootleggers. Federal indictments also were re turned againat officers of the Keystone Freight corporation, alleged agent of an eastern wine concern and against Dr.

Eugene Friedman, local agent for the California Wine company, and R. J. Stowell, owner of laboratory. The latter two were charged with attempting to bribe a prohibition agent to obtain approval for their permits from the prohibition department.
